Black History Heroes Book Club

Welcome to the Book Club!

  • THIS QUARTER'S BOOK TITLE: The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Coloredblindness
  • AUTHOR: Michelle Alexander
  • READING AND DISCUSSION PERIOD: July 1, 2012 - September 30, 2012
  • INITIAL DISCUSSION QUESTION: According to a The New York Times report, "[t]he United States has less than 5 percent of the world's population. But it has almost a quarter of the world's prisoners." See U.S. prison population dwarfs that of other nations, by Adam Liptak, NYT (04/23/08). What is the reason for America's growing Industrial Prison Complex? What, if any, connection does it have with the history of enslavement of Africans in America?

The Black History Heroes blog's quarterly online book club will be reading and discussing The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander from 7/1 through 9/30/12. The goal of the BHH book club is to gather the blog's readers into a dialogue around a book related to African history and culture. Once you have read the book, post your commentaries and develop your discussions here regarding the book.
